The 3rd APPO R&D Directors Forum kicked off on Monday, April 20, 2026 in Nigeria with a field visit to the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Kaduna.
This first step provided an opportunity to witness firsthand the quality of facilities and infrastructure developed to support research and innovation in the energy sector. The institution stands out as a true jewel, reflecting strong potential for advancing knowledge and technical capacity in Africa.

While the level of excellence observed is undeniable, the visit also highlighted a key challenge: visibility. The achievements and capabilities of such institutions must extend beyond local and national boundaries to be fully recognized at the continental level.
In his remarks, the APPO Secretary General HE Farid Ghezali emphasized the urgent need for Research and Development in Africa to move from knowledge production to the delivery of concrete, measurable results. He called for stronger alignment with real needs, enhanced collaboration between research centers, industry, and public authorities, and a clear focus on impact.

He further stressed the importance of shifting from a local or national perspective to a truly African vision—one that promotes cross-border collaboration and positions African innovation on the global stage.

The visit sets the tone for the Forum, reaffirming APPO’s commitment to making R&D a lever for action, driving solutions, and delivering tangible outcomes for the continent.
