At the forefront of the African energy industry“, the main theme of the African Energy Week perfectly reflects the reality and the spirit of the proceedings of this meeting that began on November 9, 2021 in the city of Cape Town, South Africa and which brought together all the actors involved in the energy sector in Africa. Oil producing Member countries, national and international energy companies were all gathered to discuss the future of energy in Africa.
Opened by the South African Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Africa Energy Week 2021 is intended to be a series of exchange of ideas, an interactive exhibition and networking event, bringing together global and African stakeholders, stimulating growth in the sector and promoting Africa as a destination for Africa-focused events.
It is therefore in this capacity that APPO, which aspires to be the global reference and leading institution on African hydrocarbon matters, took an active part in this event, through conferences and also a pavilion hosted by the executives of this organization.
The opening ceremony was marked by a speech by the SG of APPO, Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim who also actively participated in the ministerial session on the theme of positioning the African oil and gas industry at the forefront of energy growth.

Several topics were discussed during this week. These included:
- NOCs at the Crossroads:
- Increasing Production and Investment in the Energy Transition;
- Hydrogen – A key for changing for African Fossil Fuel Exporting Countries;
- Investor Forum: AEICORP, the African Energy Bank and the Future of Oil and Gas Financing on the Continent;
- Upstream Forum: The Rise of the Independents: A New Breed of Explorers and Producers on the Continent;
- Energy Dialogues – Sharing Knowledge Among Oil Agencies;
- Investor Forum: Facilitating the Development and Financing of Downstream and Midstream Infrastructure. Refineries, pipelines and petrochemical plants;
- the golden age of natural gas in Africa;
- the geopolitics of energy in Africa; maximizing local content development and capacity building to improve return on investment and social justice;
- data centers – big energy consumers or change agents in the energy transition;
- Africa’s equitable energy transition: A Roadmap to End Energy Poverty by 2030;
- International Financing of Renewable Energy Projects on the Continent;
- The African Energy Transition Plan (AETP), etc.
A special closed-door session between leaders and other representatives of the NOCs was also held during the event.
The agenda of the APPO Secretary General was devoted to several bilateral meetings with several ministers of oil producing countries members and non-members of the APPO, organizations and other development partners wishing to intervene in the energy sector in Africa.APPO also hosted a booth to promote its image to the public and make itself known to the public present at the African Energy Week in Cape Town.
