The Secretary General of APPO was received today, January 14, 2026 in audience by the Ambassador of Algeria to the Republic of Congo, H.E. Azeddine Riache. In a friendly atmosphere, the two personalities discussed the future of Africa in the field of energy.
The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, along with Gabon, Libya and Nigeria, is one of the four African countries that came up with the idea of creating APPO in the 1970s and 1980s. It is therefore an Ambassador very familiar with the challenges of APPO who received the SG of APPO, H.E. Farid Ghezali, in the premises of the Embassy of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in the Republic of Congo at Brazzaville. The SG of APPO made the trip to officially introduce himself to the Ambassador. He said that the APPO Secretariat remains at the disposal of all Member Countries, including Algeria, for all issues related to the field of oil and gas, assuring that APPO is at the forefront of intra-African cooperation and at the service of all African peoples.
The Ambassador, for his part, took the opportunity to congratulate H.E. Farid Ghezali on his appointment and assumption of office as head of the APPO Secretariat, wishing him every success in his mandate, and indicating that the success of the SG will be equivalent to that of the APPO Member Countries, and by extension, African countries. He added that he remained available to provide support to the Secretariat, as the representative of Algeria, a founding Member country. H.E. Azeddine Riache noted that the coordination of efforts is a guarantee of the success of the APPO’s action to provide an effective response to the persistent development challenges facing Africa in general, and specifically in the field of energy. Recalling the wealth of Africa’s subsoil in terms of energy, he stressed that countries must find a way to make this endowment a means of growth. And to do this, he added, Algeria remains available to share with other Member Countries its expertise and experience in the oil and gas sector. The Ambassador highlighted the key areas of capacity building and human capital training as important areas of cooperation within APPO.
Before parting ways, the two personalities exchanged vows. The SG first asked the Ambassador to convey his wishes for a Happy New Year 2026 to H.E. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria as well as to the Algerian government and people. In response, H.E. Azeddine Riache expressed his best wishes to the staff of the APPO Secretariat as well as to all African populations. The SG finally took the opportunity to convey an invitation from the Secretariat to the Ambassador to take part in the 4th Forum of Ambassadors and Heads of Missions of APPO Member Countries accredited to the Republic of Congo, scheduled to be held on January 27, 2026 in Brazzaville, which marks the 39th anniversary of APPO, founded on 27 January 1987 in Lagos, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
