The Secretariat of the African Petroleum Producers Organisation (APPO) received with a heavy heart the sad news of the death of His Excellency, Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, Secretary General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on July 5, 2022 in Abuja, Nigeria.
The world and and particularly Africa has indeed lost a leader, a reformer, and an advocate for the oil and gas industry.
Barkindo’s death is indeed a huge loss to his family, his country, Nigeria, our continent, Africa, the OPEC family and indeed the global oil industry. As Secretary General of OPEC and a key driver of the OPEC+ alliance, Barkindo’s contribution to the stabilization of the global oil industry from 2016 and especially during COVID-19 will always be remembered. Barkindo succeeded in raising the profile of OPEC as stabilizer of the global energy market at the most volatile periods on the Organization’s history.
Africa in particular deeply appreciates him for representing its interest in the World Oil politics.
APPO’s Secretary General, His Excellency, Dr. Omar Farouk Ibrahim on behalf of APPO Secretariat sends deep condolences to his family, friends and loved ones; the President and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the OPEC Community.
May Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest.

Le Secrétariat de l’Organisation des Producteurs de Pétrole Africains (APPO) a reçu avec un cœur lourd la triste nouvelle du décès de Son Excellence, Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, Secrétaire Général de l’Organisation des Pays Exportateurs de Pétrole (OPEP) le 5 juillet 2022 à Abuja, Nigeria.
Le monde et plus particulièrement l’Afrique a en effet perdu un leader, un réformateur et un défenseur de l’industrie pétrolière et gazière.
La mort de BARKINDO est en effet une perte énorme pour sa famille, son pays, l’Afrique et le monde. En tant que Secrétaire Général de l’OPEP et créateur de l’Alliance OPEP+, la contribution de BARKINDO à la croissance et au développement de l’OPEP est inégalée. Il était une encyclopédie pour l’OPEP et les questions énergétiques, maîtrisant aussi bien les questions sur l’énergie que la politique internationale.
L’Afrique, en particulier, l’apprécie profondément pour avoir représenté ses intérêts dans la politique pétrolière mondiale.
Le Secrétaire Général de l’APPO, Son Excellence Dr Omar Farouk Ibrahim, au nom la grande famille APPO et en son nom propre, adresse ses profondes condoléances à sa famille, ses amis et ses proches, au Président et au peuple de la République Fédérale du Nigeria et à la Communauté de l’OPEP.
Que Dieu Tout-Puissant accorde à son âme le repos éternel.
